Antique Art Deco Chinese Allover Floral Taupe 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional piece captures the transitional elegance of the Art Deco movement as interpreted by Chinese weavers. Characterized by its simplified, yet lush, naturalistic motifs, this carpet is a superb example of early 20th-century antique rugs.
The palette is defined by a striking juxtaposition of hues. The expansive central field utilizes a sophisticated, shifting taupe, providing a rich, earthy foundation. This deep tone is beautifully offset by the wide, verdant border of celadon green, a signature color pairing of the period. This piece exemplifies the refined use of brown earth tone color rugs in decorative arts.
The composition features an enchanting allover design of flowering vines and branches that gracefully traverse the field and border. The stylized blossoms—rendered in vibrant shades of rose, gold, and sapphire—create a sense of dynamic movement against the quiet background. The design avoids heavy symmetry, favoring the organic flow of nature.
Woven with luxurious, high-quality wool, the pile retains a wonderful sheen and softness, indicative of its excellent preservation over the last century. Its generous proportions make it ideal for anchoring a major living space or dining area. This magnificent textile is among the finest room size rugs available from the Art Deco era.
