Antique American 1920s Square Multicolor Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 73 x 80 inches (6’1″ x 6’8″). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor.
The design is a masterful interpretation of the classic patchwork technique, utilizing large, vertical rectangular blocks of solid color. The palette is intentionally varied, incorporating rich jewel tones alongside soft pastels and deep earth hues, creating a dynamic and complex visual field. This vibrant saturation and unique square format place the piece among the most desirable multicolor jewel tone textiles of the era.
The expansive square field is characterized by an organized yet spontaneous arrangement of color blocks, creating an allover effect where no single motif dominates. This structural simplicity allows the interplay of color and texture to become the primary focus.
The main field is framed by a sophisticated, geometric border composed of alternating triangles and diamond shapes, echoing the pieced construction of the central design. This is a highly collectible artifact, reflecting the resourcefulness and aesthetic sensibilities of American textile production during the interwar period.
Condition: Good.
