Wool Hand Knotted Pile Blue 1920s Floral Oval Antique Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exquisite piece captures the height of the Chinese Art Deco weaving tradition, characterized by its open field and dramatic, asymmetrical composition. The elegant Oval design relies heavily on naturalistic elements, making it a superb example of floral rugs from the period.
The luxurious, deep indigo ground provides a striking contrast to the delicate, stylized branches and blossoms. This saturated hue, often referred to as midnight blue, elevates the piece beyond mere floor covering into a statement of artistry. Collectors seeking dramatic depth often gravitate toward blue color rugs that utilize such rich, uniform fields to highlight complex imagery.
Hand-knotted from fine wool, the pile retains a wonderful sheen, emphasizing the subtle shifts in tone across the carved, raised motifs. The central vignette features a graceful, gnarled branch adorned with delicate flowers and two stylized birds—a common symbolic pairing in traditional Chinese design. Such fine, well-preserved examples of antique rugs in an Oval format are increasingly rare in the market.
The visual composition suggests a grand scale, ideal for anchoring a sophisticated living space or formal dining area. The expansive Oval design and commanding presence make it suitable for those requiring Room Size Rugs (7.08ft x 9.08ft) that offer both history and contemporary appeal. This rug is a timeless testament to 1920s elegance.
Condition: Good.
