Antique Chinese – Ningxia Chinese Yellow 1870s Rug, Circa Date: 1870s. This exquisite piece represents the finest tradition of ningxia rugs, characterized by their sparse, meditative designs and robust construction. The primary field color is a muted, aged yellow, placing it among the most desirable yellow color rugs of the late 19th century.
The central field is framed by a striking border, defining the unique, lobed shape typical of ceremonial mats or saddle covers. Within the yellow ground, delicate, stylized motifs suggest abstract floral designs and traditional Chinese symbols, rendered with a minimalist elegance that defines the regional aesthetic.
Due to its specialized square shape and relatively compact dimensions, this item functions perfectly as a decorative accent or a small scatter size rug. Such pieces were often commissioned for specific uses within temples or imperial residences, lending them an air of profound historical significance that transcends mere decoration.
The deep patina and natural fading evident in the wool fibers speak to its genuine age and provenance. This square Ningxia example is a highly sought-after collectible, offering a unique opportunity to acquire a rare piece of textile history among our collection of exceptional antique rugs.
