Antique Art Deco Room Size Wool Blue, Multicolor Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional weaving represents the pinnacle of early 20th-century Chinese Art Deco production, blending traditional imperial motifs with the bold, graphic sensibilities of the modern era. Such pieces are highly sought after by collectors of antique rugs due to their unique aesthetic fusion and superb quality.
The dramatic central field is rendered in a saturated, deep indigo blue color, overlaid with a dense, swirling cloud pattern (Ruyi motif). A magnificent, golden-hued imperial dragon dominates the sky, descending toward a lower register of stylized, undulating waves rendered in rich ochre and tan tones, suggesting a powerful scene of celestial descent.
Contrasting sharply with the meditative central scene is the extraordinarily vibrant border, featuring broad, concentric bands of color that create a dynamic, rainbow-like effect, characteristic of the Art Deco movement’s love for geometric abstraction. The inner guard border features finely detailed aquatic life, including stylized fish and sea creatures, adding layers of symbolic meaning related to prosperity and abundance.
Woven from high-quality wool, this textile retains a remarkable luster and depth of color, ensuring its durability and visual impact. Its generous proportions classify it as a true room size rug, perfectly scaled to anchor a sophisticated living space or grand reception hall, offering both historical value and unmatched decorative presence.
