An early 19th-century French Empire period Savonnerie carpet from around 1820, measuring approximately 243.8 × 396.4 cm (about 8’0″ × 13’0″). The composition is built on a green field with a green border, with pink accents, in the formal Empire-period vocabulary.
Savonnerie carpets — named for the Savonnerie soap-works at Chaillot, where the manufacture was originally established under royal charter in the 17th century — represent the highest tradition of French knotted-pile carpet production. Empire-period Savonneries are particularly rare on the antique market.
