A late 19th-century Indian Agra carpet from around 1890, measuring approximately 457.2 × 579.3 cm (about 15’0″ × 19’0″). The composition is a rose floral design over a dusty rose ground, framed by a beige-toned border — a softer, more romantic palette than the saturated reds and blues typical of contemporary Persian Sultanabads of the same era.
Agra, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has been a center of high-quality hand-knotted carpet production since the Mughal period of the 16th and 17th centuries. Agra carpets of the late 19th century, working from both Persian and Mughal classical vocabularies, were among the most respected room-sized antique carpets in the Western collecting market.
