A 19th-century French needlepoint carpet from around 1880, measuring approximately 213.5 × 365.9 cm (about 7’4″ × 12’4″). The composition is built around a four-star motif on an ivory ground, framed by a burgundy border — a particularly decorative palette and one well suited to formal living rooms and dining spaces.
The piece is woven from wool and silk on a canvas foundation, a higher-end material specification that gives the surface its characteristic subtle sheen and depth.
French needlepoint carpets are made by stitching yarn through an open-weave canvas backing; the result is a flat, embroidery-like surface very different from the pile of knotted carpets. Antique pieces of this size and material specification are now well over 140 years old.
Authentic one-of-a-kind antique European carpet.
