A striking antique purple Chinese Art Deco, hand-knotted in wool in China around 1920. This one-of-a-kind piece showcases a modern / modernist design across a purple palette, and measures 2’0″ x 4’0″.

Chinese Art Deco rugs emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, when weavers in Tianjin – most famously in the workshops associated with Walter Nichols – paired traditional Chinese craft with the bold, asymmetrical, modern aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. The result is a distinctive look: spacious fields, oversized blossoms and a fresh, painterly use of color.

As a smaller scatter size, it makes a perfect accent for an entryway, reading nook or bedside – and layers beautifully over a larger rug or natural fiber. The purple tones lend a jewel-box richness to a more formal room. Hand-knotted from durable wool, it is made to be lived with and handed down.
