Turkish Rugs

Turkish weaving covers an enormous range, from the fine workshop carpets of Hereke to the plain-woven kilims of Anatolian villages, and this collection leans firmly towards the village end. Most pieces here are flat-woven kilims from the middle decades of the twentieth century, built from bold diamonds, stripes and stepped geometry in wool that was usually dyed and spun in the same community that wove it. Because a kilim has no pile, the design is the fabric itself and reads clearly from both faces. That makes these rugs light, reversible and well suited to layering, wall hanging or rooms where a thick carpet would feel heavy. Square formats are unusually well represented alongside the more common rectangles and runners. A handful of knotted pile rugs from Anatolia sit here too, including prayer rugs and village carpets. For what to look for when buying a flat weave, see our antique kilim buying and identification guide.
