Antique Chinese – Baotou Chinese Brown 1900s Rug, Circa Date: 1900s. This exceptional Baotou piece represents the highly symbolic and charming aesthetic of early 20th-century Chinese weaving. Its composition is distinctly vertical, focusing the eye on the central mythological scene, making it a unique example among antique rugs.
The field is dominated by a rich, warm camel hue, placing this piece squarely within the desirable category of brown earth tone color rugs. This grounding color provides a perfect contrast for the ivory and pale blue motifs that depict stylized pine trees and auspicious cranes. The use of this specific palette is characteristic of the Baotou region, known for its reserved yet powerful color choices.
Woven in a narrow format, this piece functions beautifully as a runner or a highly decorative element in a confined space. Its dimensions classify it among small scatter size rugs, ideal for placement beside a bed, in a hallway, or as a striking wall hanging where its detailed iconography can be fully appreciated.
The central tableau is rich with traditional Chinese symbolism, featuring the deer of longevity and the stylized cranes of good fortune, interwoven with highly stylized botanical and floral rugs elements. The vibrant, geometric border in deep reds and pinks frames the scene dramatically, offering a powerful visual counterpoint to the subtle, monochromatic field design.
