Antique Large Yellow Chinese – Art Deco Knotted Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving showcases the transitional period when traditional Eastern motifs began merging with modern Western sensibilities. The rug’s substantial size and refined palette immediately establish its presence in any grand interior.
The design adheres to the highly sought-after aesthetic of Chinese Art Deco, characterized by its open, uncluttered field and sophisticated use of negative space. The central ground is rendered in a luminous yellow, providing a warm contrast to the deep indigo border. Given its dimensions, this piece is classified as a large format floor covering, ideal for anchoring a spacious living room or dining area.
The field is sparsely populated by trailing vines and butterflies, rendered with graceful movement. The primary ornamentation consists of delicate floral sprays that emanate from the corners and sides, drawing the eye toward the richly detailed main border. This naturalistic approach, while simplified for the Art Deco era, retains the poetic charm inherent in classic Chinese textile art.
A true collector’s piece from the Republican period, this rug represents a pinnacle of quality and artistic execution from the 1920s. Its excellent preservation and historical significance ensure its status among highly desirable antique rugs available today, offering both investment value and unparalleled decorative impact.
