Antique Chinese – Baotou Chinese Ivory 1890s Rug, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional Baotou piece represents the finest weaving traditions of late Qing Dynasty antique rugs. Its composition is defined by a serene, symmetrical arrangement, characteristic of pieces commissioned for scholarly or domestic settings in Northern China.

The field utilizes a soft, aged ivory color rugs ground, providing a sophisticated canvas for the rich symbolism woven throughout the design. Contrasting shades of deep indigo, cinnabar red, and charcoal black highlight the central medallion and the twin presentation vases, creating depth without sacrificing the overall restrained elegance.

The design is rich with auspicious Chinese iconography. Two large vases, flanking a central longevity symbol, overflow with stylized peonies and chrysanthemums, classic floral rugs motifs symbolizing wealth and honor. These elements are interspersed with five bats (Wu Fu), representing the five blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a natural death.

Given its intimate scale, this piece functions perfectly as a small scatter size rug, ideal for a private study, a fireside hearth, or as a striking wall hanging. The wool retains a luxurious, soft handle, and the natural dyes have mellowed beautifully over the last 130 years, offering a rare example of late 19th-century Baotou artistry in remarkable condition.
