Antique Besserabian Ukraine Floral Flat Weave Rug, Country of Origin: Ukraine, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional Besserabian flat weave, or Kilim, exemplifies the sophisticated textile artistry emerging from Western Ukraine during the late 19th century. These pieces, often influenced by French Neoclassical and Empire styles, brought European courtly aesthetics into Eastern European weaving traditions.

The design is dominated by highly detailed naturalistic floral motifs, rendered with an almost tapestry-like precision. A central wreath of lush roses and small blue forget-me-nots frames an interior field (which appears to bear initials, perhaps “VM” or “ZM”), while thick, scrolling garlands fill the corners and borders, creating a sense of opulent abundance typical of the period’s decorative arts.

Woven entirely in wool, the flat-weave technique allows the saturated colors to stand out sharply against the deep, rich ground. The use of a nearly black brown earth tone color for the field provides dramatic contrast to the vibrant reds, crimsons, and soft yellows of the blossoms, highlighting the three-dimensional quality of the shading.

While many Besserabian rugs were produced in smaller formats, this example is scaled appropriately for use as a room size rug, making it a rare and impressive decorative statement. It represents a significant historical link between traditional Eastern European weaving and Western European design principles, and is a superb example within our collection of antique rugs.
