Antique Chinese – Peking Small Scatter Size Wool Yellow Rug, Circa Date: 1930s. This exquisite example of early 20th-century weaving represents the refined artistry characteristic of high-quality antique rugs produced in the Peking region. The design features a delicate, open composition favored during this period, utilizing negative space to emphasize the central pictorial elements.
The central field is dominated by a luminous, soft gold hue, providing a warm, neutral backdrop that highlights the intricate motifs rendered in contrasting blues and soft pinks. This subtle tonality places it among the most desirable yellow color rugs from the Republican era, often sought for their ability to brighten a space without overwhelming the existing décor.
Traditional Chinese symbolism abounds, featuring gracefully rendered scenes of nature and mythology. A majestic phoenix descends amidst blossoming cherry trees and bamboo stalks, embodying prosperity and grace. These highly detailed floral rugs often incorporate elements of landscape architecture, such as the stylized pagoda and mountainous rock formations depicted here in rich indigo and pale blue.
Woven entirely in high-grade wool, the pile remains plush and luxurious, a testament to its careful preservation over nearly a century. Its designation as a small scatter size makes it an exceptionally versatile piece, perfect for adding a focal point of historical elegance to a hallway, bedside, or intimate sitting area where space is at a premium.
