Antique Art Deco Chinese Geometric Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving perfectly captures the bold, luxurious spirit of the Art Deco movement. Its highly saturated palette and stylized iconography mark it as a highly desirable piece among antique rugs from the period.
The composition is defined by its striking color contrast, featuring a rich, deep teal field—a sophisticated example of green color rugs from this era—set against a wide border rendered in vibrant magenta and berry tones. This juxtaposition of cool and warm hues creates immediate visual impact suitable for a statement interior.
The open field is populated with traditional Chinese auspicious symbols, including stylized bats (representing happiness), swirling clouds, and circular Shou medallions denoting longevity. A dramatic central medallion features a highly detailed, golden phoenix, rendered with expressive, sweeping lines that emphasize the rug’s overall decorative movement.
Framed by an architectural border featuring stylized scrolling vines and corner medallions, the design maintains a sense of structure despite the scattered field motifs. Given its substantial dimensions, this piece functions beautifully as one of the finest room size rugs available, offering a commanding presence that anchors a formal living space or dining area.
