A mid-18th-century English Axminster carpet from around 1750, measuring approximately 365.8 × 426.7 cm (about 12’0″ × 14’0″). Per the original ARS catalog notes, the unusual camel field of this period Axminster appears behind an in-and-out palmette, leaf, and vine pattern adapted from virtually contemporary Indian Mughal carpets, with the ivory palmette-and-lancet-leaf border drawing on the same source. The colour palette is purely Western, however. This carpet could have been woven during the lifetime of the Axminster-Wilton founder Thomas Whitty.
Hand-knotted wool. Exceptionally rare authentic 18th-century English antique.
