Antique Chinese – Ningxia Yellow 1900s Rug, Circa Date: 1900s. This Ningxia example showcases the distinctive figural and landscape elements characteristic of early 20th-century Chinese weaving. The composition is highly narrative, offering a glimpse into traditional iconography, and we present this piece among our collection of antique rugs.
The field is dominated by a soft, faded salmon tone, beautifully contrasted by the deep, saturated indigo of the stylized figures and the bold border. This specific coloration, while visually leaning toward coral, is often categorized within the broader spectrum of yellow and orange hues typical of the region’s dye work.
The central panel features stylized representations of horses, clouds (Ruyi motifs), and abstract landscape elements, arranged in a balanced, yet dynamic, composition. Unlike medallion designs, the figures are distributed across the entire field, creating an effective allover pattern contained within the strong geometric frame.
The narrow, elongated format of this piece makes it perfectly suited for transitional spaces, hallways, or intimate seating areas. Its manageable dimensions classify it as a highly desirable small scatter size, offering significant historical impact without requiring a large footprint.
