Moud Rugs

Moud, sometimes written Mud, is a small weaving town in the Khorasan province of north-eastern Iran, and its rugs are among the most finely knotted Persian village carpets. The characteristic Moud design is a densely drawn herati pattern, a repeating diamond enclosing a rosette flanked by curved leaves, worked at a scale small enough that the field reads almost as texture from standing height. Palettes are typically restrained, built on ivory, soft blues and muted reds rather than the saturated tones of southern Persian weaving, which is part of why Moud carpets sit easily in quiet interiors. Wool is usually good quality and tightly spun, and pieces wear well. Moud belongs to the same broad weaving region as Mashad, and the two are sometimes confused; Moud is generally the finer and more precisely drawn of the pair.
