Lesghi Rugs
Lesghi rugs are a fascinating and visually striking subset of Caucasian tribal carpets, often associated in the rug-collecting world with bold star-pattern medallions that reflect the rich weaving heritage of the eastern Caucasus region. The term “Lesghi” (or Lesghi star) refers less to a single ethnic weaving group and more to a distinctive design element found on rugs produced in areas like Shirvan, Kuba, and parts of Daghestan — where weavers incorporated large serrated stars and related geometric motifs into dynamic compositions.
These hand-knotted rugs typically feature repeated multi-pointed star medallions — sometimes interpreted as “Stars of Wisdom” — set against fields filled with complementary geometric forms, symbolic animals, floral elements, or cloud-band motifs. Woven with high-quality wool and natural dyes, Lesghi rugs often display vivid colour contrasts such as rich reds, deep blues, ivories, and golden earth tones that give them both tribal character and decorative energy.
While scholarship continues to refine the historical origins of the Lesghi designation, these rugs remain prized by collectors and designers for their bold graphic language, cultural resonance, and spirited expression of Caucasian weaving artistry.
