Rug Resizing Services in New York

Rug resizing is the careful shortening or narrowing of a hand-knotted rug so it fits a new room, with the cut edges rebound or refringed so the rug stays stable and looks finished. Rugs On Net resizes antique, vintage and new hand-knotted rugs from our Manhattan studio. Send us photographs and the size you need and we will tell you whether your rug is a good candidate and what it will cost.

When does resizing make sense?

Resizing makes sense when you love a rug but it no longer fits: a move to a smaller room, a rug that runs under furniture or into a doorway, or a damaged end that is better removed than rewoven. It is also common for runners that need to fit a specific hallway or staircase.

  • Shortening: removing length from one or both ends, then securing the foundation and adding new fringe or a bound end.
  • Narrowing: removing width from the sides and rebuilding the side cords (selvedges).
  • Reshaping: some rugs can be cut to a round, oval or custom shape for a specific space.

Which rugs should not be cut?

Not every rug should be resized. A rug with a centered medallion or a complete border design can lose its balance and much of its value if it is cut in the wrong place, and rare antique pieces are usually worth more left whole. We look at the design, the condition of the foundation and the rug’s value before recommending anything, and we will tell you honestly if a different size rug from our collection is the better answer.

How does the process work?

  1. Email photographs of the whole rug, both ends, the back, and the current and target size to [email protected], or call (212) 683-0167.
  2. We review the design and construction and give you a recommendation and a quote.
  3. The rug comes to our studio, where the cut is planned against the pattern, the foundation is secured, and the new ends or sides are finished by hand.
  4. The rug is returned to you ready for the floor.

Rug resizing FAQ

Can an antique rug be resized?

Often yes, but it depends on the design, the condition and the value of the rug. We examine each piece first and will advise against cutting a rug when it would hurt its value or balance.

Will the rug look cut after resizing?

Done properly, no. The cut is planned around the pattern and the new ends or sides are finished by hand to match the rug, so it reads as a complete rug.

How much does rug resizing cost?

Every resizing is quoted individually, because the cost depends on the size of the rug, how much is removed, and how the edges are finished. Send photographs and measurements for a quote.

Can you make a rug smaller and round?

Some rugs can be reshaped into a round, oval or custom shape. It works best on allover designs without a central medallion. Send us photographs and we will tell you if your rug is suitable.

How long does rug resizing take?

It depends on the rug and the amount of work. We give you a time estimate together with the quote, before any work starts.
