Boucherouitte Rugs
The Boucherouitte is a contemporary “eco-friendly” tradition from the Berber tribes of Morocco. Instead of wool, these rugs are woven from recycled textile scraps—cotton, nylon, and synthetic bits—creating a riot of color and texture.
Unlike the minimalist Beni Ourain, Boucherouittes are wild, abstract, and incredibly vibrant. They represent a high-art form of upcycling, bringing a playful, “Bohemian” spirit and a tactile explosion of color to any modern living space.
Boucherouitte rugs are vibrant, abstract Moroccan textiles celebrated for their sustainable construction, traditionally woven from recycled cotton, wool, and mixed fabrics. Rooted in the broader tradition of Berber carpets, these expressive “rag rugs” favor artistic freedom over strict symmetry, resulting in spontaneous color combinations and richly varied textures.
Many designs echo the symbolic language of Berber tattoos, incorporating abstract markings that reflect identity, protection, and storytelling within Moroccan Berber culture. Together, these elements capture the spirited, bohemian character of Moroccan weaving; learn more about the broader Moroccan weaving tradition and the history of authentic rugs of Morocco.
