Maraselli Rugs

Maraselli rugs are a distinctive and highly collectible category of Caucasian hand-knotted carpets that trace their origins to the Shirvan district of the southeastern Caucasus, an area renowned for its rich tribal weaving heritage and historic workshop traditions. These rugs were produced primarily in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often in smaller scatter sizes and prized for their complex all-over geometric compositions and richly symbolic motifs.

Characteristic of the Maraselli style are densely patterned fields filled with interconnected diamonds, stylized boteh (paisley-inspired) figures, rosettes, and angular geometric forms, frequently framed by multiple elaborately detailed borders. In many examples, a prayer rug layout with a defined mihrab (prayer niche) is enhanced by vibrant natural dyes — including madder reds, deep indigos, warm golds, and earthy greens — that have mellowed beautifully with age.

Though relatively rare, authentic Maraselli rugs are valued by collectors and design aficionados for their tribal energy, artistic complexity, and cultural resonance. Whether displayed as accent pieces or integrated into a curated collection of Caucasian textiles, they bring both historical depth and visual richness to interiors
