Borlou Rugs

Borlou rugs hail from a specific weaving center in Western Anatolia (Turkey) that gained prominence during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These rugs are often recognized as the “cousins” of the more famous Oushak carpets.

They typically feature large-scale, soft floral designs and spacious compositions, but often with a slightly more structured and finer weave than the typical Oushak. With a palette favoring pastels, earthy terracotta colors, and creams, Borlou rugs are highly sought after by designers for their ability to provide a “shabby-chic” or light, airy antique feel that complements contemporary and transitional interiors perfectly.

Borlou rugs are tribal carpets known for their vibrant motif language and spirited design compositions. Traditionally made by “better” Turkish weavers, these finer weave Oushak type area rugs often showcase more delicate motifs, softer colors and contrast, and intricate border treatments. Borlou weavings bridge the line between functional floor covering and textile weaving artwork, bringing an energetic handmade character to casual or upscale living spaces where personality and handcrafted distinction are prized.
