Use felt or natural-rubber pads under wool/cotton; avoid low-quality PVC or crumbly latex that can stain floors. On radiant heat, choose breathable pads.

Wool (renewable, biodegradable), jute/sisal/seagrass (fast-growing), and Tencel (closed-loop lyocell) rate well. Petroleum-based synthetics are durable but non-biodegradable.

Fine wool, polyester (plush synthetics), and Tencel rug materials feel soft and silky. Jute is coarser; seagrass feels smooth but firm.

Solution-dyed polypropylene and solution-dyed nylon are highly colorfast. Natural-dyed wool and silk can fade—rotate rugs and use UV shades.

True wool allergy is rare; discomfort is usually coarse fiber irritation. Wool rugs can trap dust until vacuumed, supporting cleaner air between cleanings.

Only cautiously on solution-dyed polypropylene (very dilute, spot-tested). Avoid bleach on wool, nylon (unless specified), viscose, cotton, or dyed naturals.

Polypropylene and polyester are cheapest (\~\$1–\$6/sq ft typical for carpet-grade); wool ranges mid-to-high (\~\$4–\$20+/sq ft); silk is premium (\$30–\$100+/sq ft for fine hand-knots).

They’re common, but latex can off-gas and eventually crumble (delaminate). Use a breathable pad and expect shorter lifespans than hand-knotted wool.

Solution-dyed polypropylene or PET are top choices for UV, water, and stain resistance. Natural jute/sisal rug materials outdoors generally fail in humidity.

New wool rug materials shed initially; jute sheds fine dust; synthetics shed least. Quality wool typically settles after a few months with routine care.

Wool can be targeted by moth larvae—keep rugs clean, vacuum edges, and store textiles washed. Freezing infested items for 48–72 hours can help.

Use thin, breathable rug materials like flatweave wool or cotton and a ventilated pad; avoid thick shags and impermeable foam pads that trap heat.
