This late nineteenth-century Persian Kerman Lavar (often referred to as Lavar Kerman) represents the absolute zenith of the "Golden Age" of Persian weaving. Originating from the city of Kerman, the "Lavar" designation signifies a specific group of textiles from the nearby village of Ravar, renowned for producing the most sophisticated and finely woven Persian carpets in the empire. An oversized specimen of this caliber was almost certainly an aristocratic commission, intended for the grandest palace or embassy interiors of the era. The composition is centered upon a Very Fine Allover Floral design, characterized by an incredible density of botanical motifs that seem to breathe across the field. Unlike the rigid symmetry of some urban area rugs, the drawing in a Lavar Kerman is famed for its lyrical, "painterly" quality.
