Antique American Square Multicolor 1920s Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 76 x 77 inches (6'4" x 6'5"). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor. This exceptional square textile represents a rare example of early 20th-century American design, bridging traditional craftsmanship with burgeoning modernist aesthetics. The structure of this piece is defined by its striking square geometric arrangement, echoing the time-honored tradition of the quilt form. The palette is particularly compelling, utilizing a dark, grounding field against which sharply defined segments of color emerge.
