Antique Chinese - Art Deco Chinese 1940s Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1940s. This exquisite piece exemplifies the refined aesthetic of Chinese rugs produced during the mid-20th century, combining traditional motifs with the bold purple color palettes favored by Western designers. The field is dominated by a rich, saturated tone of deep purple, a sophisticated choice that provides a dramatic contrast to the sparse, naturalistic sprays of blossoms. This deliberate use of negative space and high contrast is a defining characteristic of the Chinese Art Deco movement, moving away from densely patterned classical designs toward modern simplicity. Four distinct clusters of delicate blossoms float elegantly across the dark purple ground, emphasizing the three-dimensional quality of the pile.
