Antique Large Square Ningxia Chinese Medallion Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1850s. This exceptional piece represents the refined aesthetic of mid-19th century Chinese courtly textiles. Ningxia rugs from this period are highly prized for their unique coloration and symbolic iconography, setting them apart from other antique rugs of the era. The field presents a captivating, repetitive pattern of stags and deer, rendered in pale gold and cream tones against the vibrant ground. In Chinese culture, the deer is a powerful symbol of longevity and wealth. A finely drawn circular medallion anchors the center of this square format, featuring an abstract, stylized bird or mythical creature, reinforcing the rug's auspicious intent. The palette is particularly striking, dominated by a rich, saturated terracotta that falls within the spectrum of Coral rugs.
