Antique Besserabian Caucasus Flat Weave Rug, Circa Date: 1850s. This exceptional 19th-century weaving represents the height of European textile influence within the Caucasian Empire, offering a sophisticated example of antique rugs. The flat-weave construction, typical of Bessarabian production, allows the intricate architectural and floral design to be rendered with remarkable clarity and precision. The palette is dramatically composed, utilizing a rich contrast between deep, almost espresso-toned ground elements and the luminous ivory beige cream white color rugs that dominate the field. Accents of vibrant rose, terracotta red, and soft sage green highlight the naturalistic bouquets of roses and peonies contained within the repeating vertical niches. The structure of the design is highly formal, presenting a rhythmic sequence of Gothic arches and stylized architectural cartouches.
