This nineteenth-century French Savonnerie carpet is a magnificent monument to European aristocratic luxury, representing the "Golden Age" of French rugs and weaving. Originally established under the patronage of Henri IV and later Louis XIV to rival the great antique carpets of the East, the Savonnerie manufactory became the exclusive provider to the French royal courts. This large-scale specimen embodies the transition from the grand Baroque style to the more delicate and romanticized floral aesthetics of the late 19th century. The composition is centered upon a fine floral and neoclassical design, characterized by a lush, central "medallion" of blooming roses, acanthus leaves, and scrolling ribbons. The drawing is remarkably "painterly," utilizing a high degree of shading and perspective to create a three-dimensional, sculptural effect.
