This early 20th-century American hooked rug is a superlative example of the "Cottage Elegance" that defined late-Victorian domestic art in North America. Historically, the hooked antique American rugs were the ultimate expression of provincial resourcefulness, yet this specific room-size specimen is distinguished by its sophisticated aspirations, mimicking the grand European Floral aesthetics of French Aubusson flatweaves and Savonnerie pile carpets. The composition is centered upon a majestic Floral Medallion, a design choice that brings an architectural focal point to a large space. The medallion is typically composed of a lush, romantic bouquet—featuring oversized roses, lilies, and scrolling acanthus leaves—rendered with a charming, hand-wrought "painterly" quality.
