Antique Chinese - Baotou Chinese Brown 1930s Rug, Circa Date: 1930s. This exceptional piece belongs to the tradition of Baotou weaving, a style celebrated for its pictorial narrative and deeply saturated colors. Dating from the 1930s, this rug represents the later evolution of the form, offering a unique perspective among antique rugs. The field is dominated by a rich, warm sienna, characteristic of the period's preference for natural dyes and earthy palettes. This deep, resonant hue provides a dramatic backdrop for the central figures, allowing the blues, pinks, and creams of the design elements to vividly emerge. It is a stunning example within the category of brown earth tone color rugs. A whimsical narrative unfolds across the vertical axis, depicting a bearded sage figure mounted upon a donkey, accompanied by a walking attendant.
