This magnificent fine late nineteenth-century Persian Tabriz carpet is a superlative example of the "Golden Age" of master-workshop weaving. Tabriz, located in Northwest Persia, has historically been the epicenter of scholarly rug design, where master weavers translated the intricate aesthetics of Safavid book illumination and court architecture into textile form. This specific specimen is distinguished by its ethereal Classic Ivory field and the breathtaking complexity of its Gonbad (Dome) medallion rug pattern. The composition is a virtuoso display of architectural symmetry. The "Gonbad" pattern is inspired by the breathtaking tile-work found in the interiors of Persian mosques, most notably the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan.
