Antique Afshar Hallway Runner Wool Blue Rug, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional example of nomadic weaving from the Afshar tribes of Persia showcases the enduring quality and intricate design typical of late 19th-century antique rugs. The Afshar are renowned for their robust construction and distinctive palette, utilizing the finest hand-spun wool. Botehs. Botehs. Botehs! This larger than usual Afshar small carpet from c.1890 has a navy ground densely patterned with rows of small botehs facing left and right alternately, rendered in warm terracotta, cream, and ochre tones against the deep indigo ground. This is an adaptation of Saraband central Persian town carpets. This highly disciplined repetition creates a powerful visual rhythm, characteristic of allover rugs produced by the Afshar weavers.
