Antique American Multicolor 1890s Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 72 x 86 inches (6' x 7'2"). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor. Originating from the late 19th century, this piece showcases a bold, graphic sensibility that distinguishes it from contemporary Oriental imports. The composition employs a precise, repeating grid structure, creating a striking allover pattern that fills the field entirely. Each square block contains a stylized, eight-pointed star motif, rendered in contrasting colors to maximize visual impact.
