Antique American Square Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 67 x 79 inches (5'7" x 6'7"). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor. The design is a sophisticated homage to the folk artistry of patchwork quilting. The composition is defined by a striking allover pattern of repeating cruciform or pinwheel motifs set against a dark ground. These blocks are meticulously arranged in a precise square grid, creating a powerful optical effect that is both structured and dynamic, reflecting the era's interest in abstract form.
