Antique American Square Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 96 x 96 inches (8' x 8'). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor. The design employs a highly detailed, naturalistic grape and vine motif, executed in a continuous, non-directional style characteristic of allover design. The palette is remarkably restrained, utilizing soft taupes, dusty rose, and cream grounds to create an effect of aged elegance and sophisticated patina. While subdued, the interplay of these hues qualifies the piece as a refined example of multicolor jewel tone textiles, offering subtle depth without overwhelming the eye. Condition: Good.
