Antique American Blue 1920s Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 42 x 51 inches (3'6" x 4'3"). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor. It embodies the spirit of early modern design while utilizing traditional quilt block construction. The palette is defined by a sophisticated use of primary colors, employing a deep, saturated black field contrasted sharply with vivid red and brilliant blue elements. The inclusion of the rich blue color is particularly effective in defining the architectural forms of the repeating motif, giving the piece a graphic, almost Pop Art sensibility decades ahead of its time.
