Antique Peking Square Room Size Wool Rug, Circa Date: 1900s. This exceptional Chinese textile captures the refined elegance characteristic of early 20th-century weaving from the capital region. The expansive, uncluttered field is rendered in a subtle, warm camel hue, providing a sophisticated contrast to the deep indigo border. The design employs classic Chinese symbolism, featuring a central vase arrangement flanked by graceful flying birds and butterflies. The sparse placement of these elements allows the quality of the wool and the clarity of the dyes to dominate, distinguishing it from denser, earlier designs. Such refined pieces are highly sought after by collectors of antique rugs. The border is a masterpiece of intricate detailing, utilizing rich navy and vibrant cobalt blue bands interspersed with scrolling vines, bamboo stalks, and blossoming sprigs in cream and pale gold.
