Antique Peking Chinese Geometric Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional example of antique rugs from the Republican era captures the shift toward pictorial and narrative designs that defined early 20th-century Chinese weaving, moving beyond strictly traditional court styles. The central field presents a highly stylized, almost cubist depiction of a traditional Chinese garden or waterscape, featuring layered hills, arched bridges, and a prominent pagoda or gazebo. The graphic, simplified forms and bold outlines signal a departure from classical motifs, leaning into a modernist aesthetic popular in Shanghai and Peking workshops of the time. The palette is striking and sophisticated, utilizing a rich contrast between the deep indigo border and the vibrant teal and turquoise hues of the water and sky.
