Antique Navajo Small Scatter Size Wool Gray, Red, White Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional weaving represents the zenith of early 20th-century Native American textile art. Presented in a highly desirable small scatter size, its strong, graphic design is characteristic of the period when traditional Navajo motifs were being refined into powerful, marketable compositions. The composition is anchored by a central stepped diamond structure, defined by bold white crosses outlined in dark brown or black. These elements create a powerful visual rhythm that is contained by vertical borders featuring repeating geometric links punctuated by squares of vibrant red. The palette is masterful in its restraint, relying heavily on the natural, undyed wool. The field is dominated by a nuanced gray color, which provides a sophisticated, grounding counterpoint to the flashes of rust and crimson.
