Antique Aubusson French Floral, Medallion Rug, Country of Origin: France, Circa Date: 1875. This exquisite example of 19th-century weaving represents the pinnacle of the Aubusson rugs tradition. Characterized by its flat-woven structure and sophisticated square design sensibility, this piece was created during a period of neoclassical revival, likely commissioned for a grand Parisian apartment or chateau. The design features a delicate central medallion surrounded by lush, naturalistic floral sprays and scrolling acanthus leaves. This elegant composition is typical of high-period French rugs, reflecting the refined tastes prevalent during the late Second Empire era. The open field of this square format allows the intricate details of the border to frame the central motif without overwhelming the overall visual harmony.
