Antique Chinese - Ningxia Chinese Blue 1880s Rug, Circa Date: 1880s. This exceptional Square example of antique rugs from the late Qing Dynasty showcases the unique aesthetic of the Ningxia region. Its composition is defined by a striking contrast between the vibrant blue field and the natural, undyed wool used for the primary motifs, creating a powerful visual clarity. The deep indigo-blue field provides a powerful backdrop for the highly stylized, almost pictorial imagery. The use of this saturated blue color rugs is characteristic of fine 19th-century Chinese weaving, suggesting high-quality natural dyes that have matured beautifully over time, lending the piece an authentic patina. The open field is populated with traditional Chinese symbolism, including stylized butterflies and vases overflowing with blossoms.
