Antique Large Chinese - Ningxia Chinese Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1840s. This exceptional piece represents the finest tradition of 19th-century Chinese weaving, originating from the highly esteemed Ningxia region. Its early date places it firmly within the category of true antique rugs, showcasing the raw, expressive artistry characteristic of the Daoguang period. The palette is remarkably sophisticated, utilizing natural dyes that have mellowed beautifully over nearly two centuries. The expansive field is dominated by rich tones of ivory and beige, providing a warm, luminous ground against which the bolder motifs stand in sharp relief. This subtle background highlights the rug's textural depth and the thick, hand-spun quality of the wool. Unlike the more formal, centralized compositions of later Chinese production, this Ningxia features an arresting, highly stylized design.
