Antique Chinese - Peking Gray 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional Chinese Peking rug captures the refined aesthetic of the early 20th century. Its expansive scale and subtle coloring make it a superb example of room size rugs from this period. The use of a soft, sophisticated gray field provides a perfect counterpoint to the vibrant border work. The defining characteristic of this piece is the masterful execution of the field, rendered in a desirable shade specific to gray color rugs. Unlike the more common gold or ivory Chinese carpets, this specific hue lends a contemporary neutrality while retaining its historical elegance. Scattered across the field are delicate, naturalistic vignettes featuring stylized birds and flowering branches. The design is framed by a complex, multi-layered border system utilizing deep indigo, apricot, and pale gold.
