A rare mid-18th-century English Axminster rug from around 1750, measuring approximately 121.9 × 264.2 cm (about 4'0" × 8'8"). The composition is a brown-toned floral design on a camel field — a vocabulary characteristic of period Axminster production from the early years of the Axminster-Wilton tradition. Axminster is the historic English carpet town in Devon, founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755 — meaning that this rug, if dated to around 1750, was woven in the very earliest years of (or just predating) that workshop's foundation.
