Antique Chinese - Peking Square Small Scatter Size Wool Black Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1890s. This exquisite square example of late 19th-century weaving represents the refined aesthetic of Chinese rugs. The composition is characterized by a single, striking circular motif set against a field of profound, saturated darkness, emphasizing the elegance of the negative space. The dramatic ground color, a rich, deep black, provides a powerful backdrop that allows the delicate palette of the design to flourish. This sophisticated use of contrast is typical of fine peking rugs from this period. The central medallion features stylized lotus blossoms and trailing wisteria rendered in soft blues, creams, and pale pinks, creating a stunning visual tension against the deep black color rugs.
