Antique Chinese - Ningxia Chinese Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1850s. This exceptional example of 19th-century Chinese weaving originates from the Ningxia region, renowned for its strong, graphic designs. The field is dominated by a saturated, almost indigo hue, making it a striking example among blue color rugs. The contrast between the deep ground and the pale ivory motifs is instantly arresting. The composition is highly complex, featuring an intricate lattice of scrolling vines and stylized blossoms that define the classic Ningxia aesthetic. The density of the patterning, which includes various auspicious symbols and stylized animals, moves beyond simple ornamentation. The overall effect is a sophisticated interpretation of traditional floral rugs and mythological themes.
