Antique Chinese - Kansu Knotted Square Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1850s. This exceptional square piece from the mid-19th century showcases the distinctive aesthetic of Chinese rugs, characterized by its bold color pairing and highly symbolic iconography. The deep indigo field provides a dramatic ground for the vibrant, rust-red motifs, creating a striking visual depth that defines this antique textile. The saturated midnight blue dye used in the field is characteristic of the finest blue color rugs produced in the Kansu region, providing a rich, velvety texture to the wool. The composition is densely populated, featuring an all-over pattern of stylized birds, grape clusters, and trailing vines. This abundance of natural imagery solidifies its status among the most compelling examples of floral rugs from the late Qing Dynasty period.
